Reusable first-hand teaching kit
One complete shape. One Tai check.
For a willing family host, club volunteer, or beginner-class facilitator. This suggested 15-minute activity introduces one first hand; it does not promise mastery or replace agreeing your table rules.
Before you begin
One-phone setup
Open the fixed first-Hu lesson on one phone, then pass it around only after learners have answered the worksheet.
Physical-tile setup
With one physical set, make one 13-tile demonstration only: 1–2–3 Characters, 4–5–6 Circles, 6–7–8 Bamboo, three Red Dragons, and one Nine Circle. Keep a second Nine Circle and three West Winds aside. This is not a full game setup.
Suggested 15 minutes
- 2 min: name four sets and a pair.
- 5 min: learners find the finishing draw.
- 4 min: identify the Tai.
- 4 min: try the West transfer and discuss why it fails.

Finish the hand, then test the Tai
Circle or say your answer before looking at any notes. These fixed Wong practice-table conditions do not change: East seat; East prevailing wind; self-draw; no bonuses; all concealed.
1. Start with 13 tiles
Question: Which one draw makes four sets and a pair?
Choices: Nine Circle · Nine Character · Nine Bamboo
2. After your draw, what makes this completed hand legal to Hu here?
3. Transfer: the tile shape stays complete
Replace the three Red Dragons with three West Winds. Everything else stays the same: East seat, East prevailing wind, self-draw, no bonuses, all concealed.

Use this after learners answer
Keep the fixed conditions visible: East seat, East prevailing wind, self-draw, no bonuses, and all concealed. This kit uses fixed Wong practice-table rules, is not a general scoring reference, and has independent Mahjong expert review pending.
Answer 1: the draw
Nine Circle. It pairs the waiting Nine Circle: 14 tiles, four sets and a pair.
Answer 2: the Tai
Red Dragon Pong: 1 Tai; Hu allowed. In this fixed all-concealed, self-draw example, Red Dragon Pong supplies the one Tai.
Answer 3: the West transfer
West: 0 Tai; no Hu. The completed shape remains, but a West Wind Pong supplies no Tai when both the seat and prevailing wind are East.
Close the loop
Say the sequence aloud: “Complete shape first. Then at least one Tai.” Learners can try the fixed lesson, inspect the tile atlas, agree table settings in the table companion, or read the full guide.
